Were it not for a continuous flood of qualified PC and network support personnel, commerce in the UK (and around the world) would inevitably grind to a halt. We have a constantly increasing requirement for people to support systems and users alike. Because of the multifaceted levels of technological advances, growing numbers of qualified workers are being sought to specialise in the many areas we need to be sure will work effectively.

How the program is actually delivered to you is usually ignored by most students. How is the courseware broken down? What is the order and do you have a say in when you'll get each part? Often, you will purchase a course taking 1-3 years and receive one element at a time until graduation. This sounds logical on one level, until you consider this: It's not unusual for trainees to realise that their training company's typical path to completion is not what they would prefer. Sometimes, a slightly different order suits them better. And what if you don't get to the end inside of the expected timescales?

The ideal solution is to have all your study materials sent to you immediately; every single thing! Then, nothing can hinder your ability to finish.

Many companies focus completely on the certification process, and avoid focusing on why you're doing this - which is of course employment. Your focus should start with where you want to get to - don't make the journey more important than where you want to get to. It's an awful thing, but the majority of trainees start out on programs that sound fabulous from the syllabus guide, but which provides a job that is of no interest at all. Speak to a selection of college graduates for examples.

You must also consider how you feel about career development, earning potential, and whether you intend to be quite ambitious. It makes sense to understand what industry expects from you, what certifications are needed and how you'll gain real-world experience. Have a conversation with someone that has a commercial understanding of the realities faced in the industry, and who can give you a detailed description of what you actually do in that role. Getting to the bottom of all this before starting out on a training programme has obvious benefits.

A skilled and practiced advisor (in contrast with a salesperson) will talk through your current situation. This is useful for understanding the point at which you need to start your studies. If you've got a strong background, or perhaps a bit of work-based experience (possibly even some previous certification?) then it's likely the point from which you begin your studies will vary from someone who is just starting out. Where this will be your initial stab at studying to take an IT exam then you might also want to start out with some basic user skills first.
